Artist Description:

The humble garden gnome is a recurring motif in Gregor Kregar’s work – a reinterpretation of an everyday object transformed into a captivating sculpture.

The gnome in folklore is a mystical and philosophical being and guardian of the earth and underground minerals. The polished stainless steel of the piece encourages introspection whilst providing a literal reflection, creating an immersive piece in which the viewer’s movement can be seen within the piece and the surrounding environment.

Gregor Kregar is a leading contemporary sculpture who lives and works in New Zealand and has exhibited his works extensively worldwide. When speaking about his work, he states, “I am interested in how the familiar subject can be represented in a way that displaces the original meaning and imbues the subject with new and unfamiliar meanings”.
