Local in the Know | Cooper Smith, Seaford
DJ. Music Producer. Seaford Local. Inspiration.
Recently, we caught up with 20 year old DJ and Music Producer, Cooper Smith at his home studio in Seaford. Over a coffee at 38South and a set performed live on the deck of the Seaford Life Saving Club with Pohss Studio, Copper shared his passion for music, whats it’s like living with Cerabl Palsy and why he loves calling Seaford home.
We also spoke to Jess Credlin, his support worker from The Purpose Project, who’s been working alongside Cooper for over two years. Born and raised in Frankston, Jess now supports Copper’s DJ career – and works locally at PARC.
Coopers new track drops today, 11 July, check it out on Spotify.
Behind the Decks with Cooper 🎧
How did your music career start?
I’ve always loved music, but when I was 16, I downloaded a DJ app on my iPad and started teaching myself. I’d practice every night—and once I started playing in my PE class at school, things really took off.
What made you want to become a DJ?
I always wanted to be a musician, but playing instruments wasn’t really an option for me because of my disability. My uncle used to show me Boiler Room DJ sets and I remember thinking, “Why can’t I do that?” So I did—and I haven’t looked back.
How did you learn to JD?
It all started with that iPad app and hours of practicing every night. Then I got some DJ gear and started playing whenever I could. I’ve been lucky to have some great mentors along the way who really helped me level up.
What style of music do you play?
Afro House and House. I love music with energy and rhythm—it’s all about creating a vibe.
Career highlights so far?
Playing at Revolver was a huge moment for me—and so was DJing at my support worker Jesslyn’s New Year’s house party. Both gigs had unreal energy and unforgettable vibes. I've also played at Australian Open, Beyond the Valley and Ability Fest.
Biggest mentors?
Callum, who helped me out when I first got my gear and supported me from day one. And now, Tom Evans—my music producer—has played a massive role in my journey.
DJ’s you’ve played with?
I’ve shared the stage with Gorgon City, Maur, Eli & Fur, Torren Foot, and Airwolf Paradise. It’s been pretty surreal!
Industry idols?
Tom Evans, Dom Dolla, Carl Cox, and Eric Powell. Their music and work ethic inspire me every day.
Where can we catch you next?
I’ll be at Revolver on August 10th, and in Brisbane for Bigsound in September. You can keep up with my upcoming gigs on my TikTok and Instagram.
What’s coming up in 2025/26?
More festivals, more club sets, more production—and releasing a lot more music. I’m just getting started.
What do you love about living in Seaford?
The people! Seaford has such a good vibe. No matter where you go, there’s always someone to chat to. Plus, the bakery is the best—no contest.
Advice to up and coming Dj’s?
Surround yourself with the right people and always show respect to those who’ve come before you. Practice every single day, say yes to every opportunity, and always support other DJs—you never know where it might lead.
‘Music has always been a huge part of my life, and being behind the decks lets me express myself in ways that words sometimes can’t’ – Cooper Smith
A Supportive Role with Purpose | Meet Jess 🤎
A Frankston local. What do you love about this City?
I was born and raised in Frankston. I went to Frankston High School and played for several local sports clubs. What I love most about Frankston is how central it is to everything, but it still has that welcoming, small-town feel. It’s like a country town by the sea, with a really strong sense of community.
What made you want to become a Support Worker?
I’ve always been passionate about helping people—it’s part of who I am. Becoming a Support Worker felt like the perfect way to turn that passion into a career. I love building genuine connections, cheering people on, and being part of their journey as they smash their goals. No two days are ever the same, and that’s what keeps it exciting! It’s so rewarding (and fun!) role where you get to make a real difference in someone’s life—and share a few laughs along the way.
How did you meet Cooper?
I work for a company called The Purpose Project, and they shared my profile on a Facebook group for NDIS services. Cooper’s mum, Bron, saw it and reached out. We had an interview, and I’ve been part of their journey—and their family—ever since.
What’s unique about working with Cooper?
Supporting Cooper is unique because his job takes us to places like nightclubs, recording studios, and interviews like this one! It’s not your typical support role—it’s diverse and inspiring.
Most unforgettable experience with Cooper?
One of the most incredible experiences was watching Cooper complete the Quick as Thieves 10km run. The determination he showed during every training session, and especially on the day of the event, was truly incredible to be a part of. Another standout moment is getting to watch him DJ. No matter where he plays, he brings the most incredible energy and vibe. He’s just so talented, and it’s amazing to see him doing what he loves and absolutely owning it.
Advice for future support workers?
Make sure your interests align with the person you’re supporting. Cooper and I share a lot of common interests, which really helps us connect on a deeper level. This job is extremely fulfilling—there’s nothing better than helping someone achieve their goals, both in their personal life and their career.
Whether its behind the decks or a crossing line, Cooper Smith is showing what’s possible with passion, support and a strong local community. Seaford is proud to call him one of their own.
