TAYLA BROEKMAN
Artist Bio:
Tayla Broekman is a Melbourne based artist and muralist. She paints pop surreal female characters and animals, who often reflect her experiences through an emotional narrative. Though her concepts are expressed fairly subconsciously, her work looks at connection to herself and others, spirituality, love and fear. Many of her characters, human or animal are an unconscious form of self portrait. Colour palette is also a key feature of each piece, either using bold contrast or soft tones and colours. Design elements like colour represent her mental state and values, depicting a sense of harmony or intensity. As a studio artist, she primarily uses gouache and acrylic paint, while her murals are created with spray paint and house. She currently has a studio at Everfresh in Melbourne.
Artwork Title:
'Weight it out'
Artwork Statement:
This piece looks at the effects of emotions on the body, and how emotional weight can translate into physical weight, creating a need for excessive physical rest. The female character depicted is sprawled across a bed, in an attempt to release the body of tension or strain, while her waist curls around the corner emphasising a sense of nurturing in the space she cradles. A safe space, yet vulnerable as the world still makes its way into the mind. Thoughts and emotions are persistent and keep her body in lethargy
